There’s a lot of speculation and hype surrounding the upcoming 11th season of “Doctor Who.” As is the case in the series, we have a brand new actor playing the role of the good Doctor. However, for the first time, the lead isn’t a man. That’s right, “Doctor Who” is becoming inclusive by hiring actress Jodie Whittaker as the latest in a long line of Doctors. And while we don’t get much in the first trailer for the upcoming season, there’s plenty for Whovians to get excited about.
The trailer is more of a teaser, to be quite honest, but nevertheless, it’s the first time we see what Whittaker brings to the role, other than the pictures of her wardrobe that have taken social media by storm. The same general feeling of fun and silliness is still there, and we get a glimpse of the new companions the Doctor will have to join her this season.
The trailer accompanied an event where new showrunner Chris Chibnall discussed the upcoming season. He explained why this season is different from previous, other than the obviously new lead. And specifically, why now is the best time to become a “Doctor Who” fan.
“It’s pretty much all new stories, all new monsters, all new villains. I think we’ve got two weeks left in filming and we haven’t come across any old villains yet,” said Chris Chibnall, new showrunner for the popular sci-fi series (via CinemaBlend).
“It’s also what’s exciting about it…This is gonna be for fans and Whovians…Season 11 is going to be for them. But it’s also for for anyone who hasn’t seen it, you won’t need this encyclopedic knowledge or a history of Doctor Who to understand this journey,” he continued.
Whether or not new potential fans flock to this season of “Doctor Who” is still anyone’s guess. However, it does feel like for the first time in a while, there’s a breath of fresh air surrounding the series. Perhaps, after 10 modern seasons, this is exactly what the doctor ordered. (heh)
