In 2014, John Green had audiences ugly-crying in the theater when the movie adaptation of his novel “Fault in Our Stars” hit the big screen. And in 2017, Nicola Yoon’s “Everything, Everything” stole our hearts with another star-crossed, illness-filled romance. Now, director Justin Baldoni (“Jane the Virgin”) introduces the latest tragic romance, this time between teens with cystic fibrosis, in the upcoming film “Five Feet Apart.”
As seen in the trailer, the film follows the story of Stella, a seventeen-year-old in and out of hospitals due to her genetic disease that weakens the lungs, causes unrelenting infections, and difficulty breathing for most of life. During one of her stays Stella meets Will, a reckless fellow CF patient, igniting an instant spark of attraction. Unfortunately, due to both being highly susceptible to illness, they must maintain a safe distance from each other (hence the name of the movie).
Luckily, the actor playing one of the leads is no stranger to forbidden relationships. Some may remember him from his younger years in “Big Daddy,” “Friends,” and “The Suite Life of Zach and Cody,” but nowadays Cole Sprouse is gaining some fame from the TV drama “Riverdale.” Loosely based on Archie Comics, Sprouse is the southside Jughead Jones dating the high-class Betty Cooper despite the disapproval of many. Sprouse has gained quite a resume for his young age, odds are he’ll do just fine in this new teen romance.
He stars alongside Haley Lu Richardson who will be playing the main role Stella. The young actress is known for her two big movie roles in 2016, Krista in “Edge of Seventeen” and Claire in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” which received a great critical response. The cast also includes fellow former Disney Channel star Moises Arias (“Hannah Montana,” “Kings of Summer”) as well as Parminder Kaur Nagra (“Bend It Like Beckham,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”).
Start stocking up on tissues, because “Five Feet Apart” will be in theaters March 22, 2019.
