'Dial Code Santa Claus' Trailer: Newly Restored '80s French Christmas Film Is 'Home Alone' Meets 'Rambo'

Released back in 1989, but seemingly lost in the fray, reduced to being available only on VHS bootlegs, “Dial Code Santa Claus,” aka “Game Over,” is a French film that is best described as “Home Alone” meets “Rambo” on Christmas Eve. And thanks to the folks at American Genre Film Archive, this lost cult-classic is restored and hitting select theaters just in time for the holiday.

In the new trailer for the film, the premise comes into focus. On Christmas Eve, a young boy named Thomas excitedly sets up an elaborate spy situation to catch Santa Claus in the act of coming down the chimney and delivering presents. All goes to plan, as the jolly red-suited fat man makes his way down the chimney. However, when St. Nick stabs the family’s dog and reveals himself to be not quite what the little boy expected, the young man takes it upon himself to suit up and take down Santa Claus once and for all.

“Dial Code Santa Claus” shares a lot in common with the 1990 classic Chris Columbus film “Home Alone.” A boy, alone in his house, must defend himself from an intruder using only his wit and whatever toys and gadgets he can find. Except where the boy in ‘Dial Code’ differs from Kevin in “Home Alone” is in the ruthlessness to his mayhem. Gone are the little one-liners and silly cartoon-esque tricks. No, Thomas puts on war paint, dons some heavy (in kid standards) weaponry, and isn’t just out to have fun – he wants to destroy Santa Claus.

“Dial Code Santa Claus” is going to be featured quite heavily this year at the Alamo Drafthouse’s many locations nationwide, as well as some other local, arthouse theaters. The folks at the AGFA are hoping that this film can become a Christmas classic. And judging by the trailer and the buzz surrounding this forgotten gem, it looks like genre film fans have an unexpected holiday treat coming their way.

“Dial Code Santa Claus” is playing in select theaters now and will have special engagements through the holidays.
