‘Underwater’ Trailer: Kristen Stewart Attempts To Survive 7 Miles Below The Surface In New Sci-Fi Film

Outside of the “Twilight” franchise, actress Kristen Stewart isn’t very familiar with the world of big-budget filmmaking. However over the next several months, the young actress not only stars in the reboot of the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise, but she also will appear in the underwater action/sci-fi film, aptly titled “Underwater.”

As seen in the trailer for the film, “Underwater” follows a group of researchers that decide to go to the ocean floor, seven miles below the surface. And as film fans have seen with any movie that tackles this type of subject, when the group gets to the bottom of the ocean, things begin to go awry, with some sort of earthquake, followed by warnings that there is something else lurking below.

Sounds like a pretty typical premise for this sort of film. But when you hear Stewart describe what “Underwater” is really about, when talking to EW, you see that there might be more going on under the surface of the film.

“It’s a really dark, scary meditation on isolation,” said the actress. Basically, it’s like a survival movie about a bunch of people that don’t know each other, and the strange, occasionally existential conversations that ensue, and the weird relationships being formed really quickly. The underlying story of [disrupting] something that really should be left in its natural state, and what you can unearth — that’s what keeps it scary.”

Joining Stewart in the cast are T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie, and Gunner Wright. “Underwater” is directed by William Eubank, who is probably best known for his work on the 2014 film “Signal.”

“Underwater” will come to theaters on January 10, 2020.

Here’s the synopsis:

A crew of underwater researchers must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory.
