Got a Tip?

Bernie Sanders Reportedly Enjoys Watching Martin Scorsese & Lars Von Trier Films On The Campaign Trail

Sure, the Democratic Presidential Primary candidates have been featured in quite a few televised debates, hundreds of speeches, and numerous TV interviews. They’ve talked about healthcare reform, immigration, civil rights, and the economy, among various other topics. Now, the field has seemingly dwindled down to just Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. And no, we’re not here to tell you who to vote for, but if you’re wondering which candidate watches better films, maybe Sanders might win your vote.

Recently, the New York Times published a profile on the Senator and Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. And in the piece, there is a moment where his pastimes are being chronicled, which includes enjoying at least two specific films on his iPad.

The profile says:

“Even his amusements seem to be in character. He uses an iPad (not a phone) to devour social media and news, and loves to watch old boxing matches and movies like ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Melancholia,’ a 2011 dystopian drama that ends with the obliteration of the Earth.”

Now, we’d be remiss if we didn’t think that maybe Martin Scorsese isn’t too pleased that Sanders is watching “The Wolf of Wall Street” on a 10-inch screen, but we’re going to assume that the candidate has seen the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film about financial fraud and excess on the big screen and he was just watching it for fun. As for “Melancholia,” it may not be the best Lars von Trier film ever produced (though it is likely the most well known), but at least it’s better than “The House That Jack Built.”

To be fair, we don’t know what films Joe Biden is a big fan of. We know that he’s probably a fan of John Wayne (if this, uh, unfortunate comment is any indication), but does he have a soft spot for auteur films? Maybe Biden has ventured deep into the works of Gaspar Noé or Hong Sang-soo?

Until we know for sure, it would appear that Sanders has Biden beat in one area—film recommendations.
