Got a Tip?

Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ To Become A Feature Length Musical?

We never thought we’d long for the days when the thoroughly average “punk” rockers Green Day were singing about masturbation rather than trying to wax political, but for whatever reason, their bloated album “American Idiot” became somewhat of a sensation, spawning radio and video hits, and a Broadway stage show that’s set to debut on April 20th.

But that’s not all from these Gilman Street punks. Deadline Hollywood reports that talks are already underway with Tom Hanks’ Playtone Productions to bring the musical to the big screen. Using the songs from the album, the film (and the current musical) would “tell the coming of age story of three small-town guys. One joins the armed forces, another moves to the city and gets mired in a drug habit, the third stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant. There is little dialogue beyond the Green Day tunes.” Let’s just hope they get some better actors than they did for the “Wake Me Up When September Ends” video (see below).

Playtone recently experienced the $610 million success of “Mamma Mia!” and seem eager to recreate that magic, though we imagine the moms and daughters demographic that propelled the ABBA fueled musical might be absent for this one.
