Got a Tip?

Andy Garcia Is Ready To Star In & Direct ‘The Godfather Part IV’ As Long As He Has Coppola’s Blessing

Will Paramount make another sequel in “The Godfather” franchise? That seems to be the question du jour, as the studio recently made a statement about the possibility as audiences brace themselves for a new version of “The Godfather Part III” hitting theaters and Blu-ray soon. Well, what we do know is that Andy Garcia, one of the stars of ‘Part III’ is down to return to his role, as well as take up the directing duties if a fourth film goes into development. That is, if Francis Ford Coppola gives his blessing.

Speaking to Insider, Garcia was asked about whether or not he’d return to the ‘Godfather’ franchise for a fourth film. And he was specifically asked if he’d be interested in directing the feature, as well.

“Absolutely, command me as you will,” Garcia said. “Whatever Francis wants, I would never question it. I owe him. I just need his blessing.”

As for where “The Godfather Part IV” might go? Garcia explained that there was an original idea after the third film for a sequel that might include the further, illegal adventures of Vincent leading the family while also flashing back to the early days of Sonny Corleone. The film would have brought back Robert De Niro and also might have included Leonardo DiCaprio as the young Sonny.

But for now? Well, Garcia said, “Maybe Vincent is dealing with the cartel at the time. And then go back to the 1930s, in the happy years when the Corleones killed everybody and nobody killed them.”

As we said earlier when the idea of a fourth ‘Godfather’ was teased by Paramount, it’s not like this is a project that is happening right now. In fact, the increased discussion around the possibility of a new film seems to have coincided with the new re-edit of “The Godfather Part II” and the buzz surrounding new tangential projects about the making of the Francis Ford Coppola classic that started it all.

However, you can never discount a major studio from throwing a bunch of money at a high-profile sequel to capitalize on the name of a franchise. So, that being said, don’t be shocked to see something happening eventually with “The Godfather Part IV.”
