Got a Tip?

‘Minari’ Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung Is Working With MGM & Brad Pitt’s Production Company On A New Film

Lee Isaac Chung is maybe not a filmmaker that you’re familiar with yet, but after you watch “Minari,” you’re definitely going to want to see everything he works on in the future. While not his first feature film, “Minari” is the big breakout feature that is sure to launch the indie director into the Oscar discussion as we end 2020 and enter 2021. It’s a film that is not only expertly crafted but incredibly emotional and beautiful in every sense of the word. It’s easily one of the very best films of 2020. So, you better believe that we’re excited for his next feature film, which is beginning to take shape over at MGM.

According to Variety, MGM and Plan B (Brad Pitt’s production company that helped produce “Minari”) are working together on the next Lee Isaac Chung project, a still-untitled film that is described as a “love story.” The film is said to follow a young corporate guy that quickly falls in love with a woman visiting from Hong Kong. Afraid of commitment, he ends things and goes on a quest to find himself. Of course, he then realizes that he should have stayed with the woman all along and has to venture to Hong Kong to find her.

While that sort of premise might not sound all that exciting, as sweet as it is, we have to remember that “Minari,” on paper, has a story that isn’t all that revolutionary either. That feature is about an immigrant family trying to start a farm in Arkansas. But what it becomes is something much, much more.

So, once again, we’re just excited that Lee Isaac Chung is working on a new film. It could be about a wet paper bag on a sidewalk and you’d find me first in line to watch it. It’s unclear when filming might begin on the new film, but with this new deal with Plan B and MGM, hopefully, there’s nothing standing between Chung and a production schedule. We know that Chung is also signed on to write and direct a remake of “Your Name,” but that doesn’t seem like it’s coming first.
