Got a Tip?

‘Nomadland,’ ‘Minari’ & ‘I May Destory You’ Among 2021 PGA Awards Nominations

The Producers Guild of America announced the pandemic delayed nominees for the 2021 PGA Awards and the “surprises” in the film category were not that surprising. Best Picture frontrunners “Nomadland,” “Minari” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” all made the cut, along with other familiar titles. The “surprises” came with the inclusion of two Amazon Studios releases, “Sound of Metal” and “Borat Subsdquent Moviefilm.”

The other five nominees were “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank” and “One Night in Miami…” and “Promising Young Woman.” As a bellwether for a Best Picture nomination, the snubs for “The Father,” “News of the World” and “Da 5 Bloods” were noteworthy.

It should be noted that since both the PGA and the Academy have gone to 10 and five+ nominations respectfully, there has always been at least one and often two to three PGA nominees that didn’t earn a Best Picture nod. Last year “Knives Out” didn’t make the, um, cut while the year before “Crazy Rich Asians” and “A Quiet Place” were just PGA nominees. Which film or films will see their dreams dashed this year? Place your bets now.

On the television side, critically acclaimed programs such as “Ted Lasso,” The Queen’s Gambit,” “I May Destroy You,” “The Flight Attendant,” “The Last Dance,” “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” all landed nominations.

The PGA Awards will be held in a virtual ceremony on March 24.
