After flirting with action films for years, most notably in the recent “Gemini Man,” Mary Elizabeth Winstead showed off her action chops in last year’s “Birds of Prey” as the superhero, Huntress. But for her next film, “Kate,” Winstead is jumping into the action film deep end in a feature that has the actress turning into a true badass.

As seen in the new trailer for “Kate,” the film tells the story of an assassin that is investigating who might have poisoned her and is trying to kill her. And by “investigate,” it really means she’s going to murder lots and lots of bad guys to find the one person who is responsible for her situation. Oh, and there’s a car chase sequence where she drives a neon vehicle, which is fun.
Joining Winstead in the cast are Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, Miku Martineau, Jun Kunimura, and Woody Harrelson. “Kate” is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who is probably best known for his directorial debut, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”
“Kate” arrives in select theaters and on Netflix on September 10. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she’s been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows a burned assassin’s furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job.
