As seen in the trailer, “The Hand of God” is a coming-of-age film that mixes heartbreak and soccer in a way that captures the era and the feeling of youth in a beautiful way. The film stars Filippo Scotti, Toni Servillo, Teresa Saponangelo, Marlon Joubert, Luisa Ranieri, Renato Carpentieri, Massimiliano Gallo, Betti Pedrazzi, Biagio Manna, Ciro Capano, Enzo Decaro, Lino Musella, and Sofya Gershevich. As mentioned, “The Hand of God” is written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. The filmmaker is probably best known for winning the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for his feature, “The Great Beauty.”

In our review of the film, from Venice, we said, “Layered, rich, complex, and chock full of ideas, Sorrentino’s latest is, in some ways, a great summarizing artistic statement. It features all his obsessions, the constant probing questions of faith, the search for meaning in life, and how far we distance ourselves from our youth with each passing day…Sorrentino’s deeply affecting effort is just as modest in its own way but is just as grand and beautiful, if not more, than his more opulent works.”

“The Hand of God” arrives in select theaters on December 3 before hitting Netflix on December 15. You can watch the new trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

From Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty), comes the story of a young man’s heartbreak and liberation in 1980s Naples, Italy. The Hand of God follows Fabietto Schisa, an awkward Italian teen whose life and vibrant, eccentric family are suddenly upended—first by the electrifying arrival of soccer legend Diego Maradona and then by a shocking accident from which Maradona inadvertently saves Fabietto, setting his future in motion. Sorrentino returns to his hometown to tell his most personal story, a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss.
