Got a Tip?

Jamie Foxx Compares New ‘Spawn’ Film To ‘Joker’ & Is Still Working On “Getting This Right”

Going back in the archives a bit, we first reported that a new “Spawn” film was being made way back in 2016. And over the past six years, comic book creator Todd McFarlane has been hyping it up as a new reinvention of the character and a stark contrast to the original 1997 film. Back in May 2018, it was first revealed that Jamie Foxx was in line to star in the film, with Jeremy Renner soon joining the cast after that. However, over the past couple of years, it has appeared that development has stalled, for whatever reason. But even still, Jamie Foxx is excited to see where it goes and promises that he still wants to see “Spawn” come to life.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Jamie Foxx offered up his semi-annual update on “Spawn.” And as always, he’s here to let you know that he and Todd McFarlane has something special planned, even comparing the film to a recent R-rated, comic book blockbuster.

“I will tell you this. I talk to Todd and the thing is that we want to craft something that is so special because I remember seeing the first ‘Spawn’ movies and then seeing the HBO versions and so we have something that is almost like an original, without giving too much away,” Foxx explained. “But it starts in a way that is so cool. And it’s not big budget, you know? And that’s what I love about it. It’s sort of like how when they did the Joker. The Joker, yes, is here, but the story about this man who was in fire, it’s the same with what we’re doing with this.”

He added, “And so, we’re just like, just getting this right, cooking it right, but staying in contact, keeping the energy going and when we lay it on you, there’s gonna be some moments where you go ‘oh man.’ You’ve been watching everybody shoot their shot and now we’re getting ready to shoot ours.”

Though there hasn’t been any solid news about when the film might actually go into production, McFarlane has kept optimistic that it would happen. At one point, Blumhouse was attached to finance and produce the film, though we’re not sure if that’s still the case. McFarlane has talked about how the script is still being worked on, but he’s confident it’ll happen soon. And considering studios love just about anything attached to a superhero comic, you have to assume this is a film that will not have trouble finding funding.

But for all the talk and all the hype, we’re still lacking in some major details and updates. So, we’ll just have to keep waiting, I suppose.
