Got a Tip?

2023 BAFTA Nominations: ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ Lead The Pack

All the major critics groups have had their say. All the American guilds have had their say (except the WGA, which, whatever). And now, finally, before AMPAS drops the hammer on Tuesday morning, the British Academy of Film and Television Art has jumped into the mix with the 2023 BAFTA Awards nominations. And, as expected, it didn’t hurt to be either Britsh or Irish when it came to this year’s major categories.

In recent years the BAFTAs, like the Oscars, have received some criticism about their lack of diversity regarding the breadth of films they chose to nominate. With no shortage of exciting films and filmmakers to choose from, the BAFTAs stepped away from the pack in many categories this year with Director being the most exciting. Casting aside heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron, more exciting choices were nominated in their stead. “The Woman King”‘s Gina Prince-Bythewood and Decision To Leave’s Park Chan-wook both picked up major nominations, joining Awards season favorites Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, and The Daniels. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all was “All Quiet on the Western Front”‘s Edward Berger appearing as the sixth nomination in this wild category.

In fact, “All Quiet on the Western Front” didn’t stop there as it steamrolled its way to a stunning fourteen nominations. This is a major coup for Netflix as the studio continues its yearly push to be taken seriously in the Awards race. Coming in right behind “All Quiet…” is “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” each with ten nominations. Both figure to be major players as we inch toward the Oscars, and their showing today suggests they’ve got a lot of support from their peers. “Everything Everywhere” in particular, seemed to be losing steam up until its massive night at The Critics Choice Awards, and now with the BAFTAs spreading love, one has to think they’re the heavy favorite not only here but looking ahead to the Oscars.

Elsewhere, familiar faces populated the acting categories as favorites Colin Farrell, Cate Blanchett, Ke Huy Quan, and Angela Bassett all scored nominations in their respective categories. Outside of a shocking showing from both leads of “Good Luck To You Leo Grande”, Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, the only other nice surprise was Hong Chau being recognized in supporting for “The Whale.”

It’s important to know that, unlike the PGA Awards or Oscars, the BAFTAs still only honor five nominees in their own Best Film category. In theory, that means those films have a significantly better chance of winning the Oscar for Best Picture than the other five nominees who didn’t make BAFTAs cut. That is unless you were “CODA” last year and the only Oscar winner not to make the BAFTA cut since “Million Dollar Baby” in 2005.

The 2023 BAFTA Awards will be hosted by the always debonair Richard E. Grant and handed out on February 19.
