Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson might be A-list stars who have appeared in huge Hollywood productions, but that doesn’t mean the actors aren’t willing to take a chance on a bold idea, as in their new film, “Daddio.”
As seen in the first-look tease from EW, “Daddio” is one of the most unique films that will debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The film follows the story of a woman who takes a cab home from the airport. Yes, that’s the entire film. The cabbie (Penn) and the woman (Johnson) end up having an intense, far-reaching conversation as they travel the streets of New York City. The film is written and directed by Christy Hall.

“It’s easier, I think, to bare your soul to someone like a cabbie, because you know you’re never going to see them again,” Hall explained about the film’s premise.
The filmmaker also commended the work done by Johnson, as the production only took 16 days and was filmed entirely on a soundstage. Though with limited resources at her disposal, Hall was able to capture something special in Johnson’s performance.
“[Johnson] brings a remarkable complexity to her character, skillfully excavating profound depths in ways that took this role to places well beyond what I had imagined,” the filmmaker said. “From start to finish, you truly cannot divert your gaze. She embodies a character who is confident yet vulnerable. She seamlessly balances between being sexy and foul-mouthed while still maintaining an innocent softness. She also has this cheeky curiosity, a playful grace that permits this conversation to unfold, because her character isn’t afraid of the colorful personalities that roam the city of New York.”
It’s unclear when we might see “Daddio” debut in theaters. However, with Johnson and Penn attached, it’s not going to be long before this film finds distribution. You can see the first-look photos below:
