It’s crazy to think it’s been almost two years since it was first reported that Warner Bros. was working on a sequel to the hit horror film, “I Am Legend.” But over that time, we really haven’t heard much else about the film. Well, thanks to a recent panel at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, Will Smith is confirming some of the details of the film, as well as giving us an update about where exactly the film sits in development.
According to ScreenDaily, Will Smith was at the Red Sea International Film Festival and was teasing his upcoming work on the highly-anticipated film, “I Am Legend 2.” The actor confirmed the earlier reports that he will star alongside Michael B. Jordan in the film, which apparently already has a script written. He also confirmed exactly how they are making a sequel featuring his character, who died at the end of the original film.
”I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information…” teased Smith. ”We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived. I can’t tell you any more but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it.”
For those who haven’t seen “I Am Legend,” the film is based on the incredible novel of the same name and follows a man who is seemingly the last man on the planet, in a world overrun with a virus that turned humans into vampire-like creatures. As mentioned by Smith, the way they’re bringing back his character is by ditching the ending of the film and going with the unused, alternate ending that was added to DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film. In that ending, Smith’s character doesn’t die.
Obviously, if a script is done, it looks like the film development is coming along as planned. We’re still likely pretty far off from the film entering production and then, eventually, landing in theaters. But at least the momentum seems to be going in the positive direction.
