Original hororr based on internet trends is getting another high-profile adaptation; Zach Cregger and Brian Duffield are taking a page from Kane Parsons‘ “Backrooms” with their meme-based feature film “Siren Head,” which has landed at Warner Bros./WB Clockwork after a heated bidding war (other suitors said to include Sony, Universal, Paramount, and Disney‘s 20th Century Studios). As mentioned in the announcement from THR, the two will co-write the script, with Duffield set to aiming to direct it. Duffield is the writer/director of the upcoming ocean horror thriller “Whalefall.” His other impressive credits over the years include the Natalie Portman Western “Jane Got A Gun” helmed by Gavin O’Connor,” uncredited work on “Predator: Badlands,” penning the script for the original JT Mollner-directed flick “Skeletons” that stars Oscar-winner Brie Larson (produced by J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot), also directed the alien abduction movie “No One Will Save You,” has a producer credit on the comedy creature feature “Cocaine Bear,” and wrote the script for the underrated Kristen Wiig sci-fi deepsea survival flick “Underwater.”

In 2018, Canadian artist Trevor Henderson created the cryptid meme, which took off online with Gen Z having particular fun with it. That said, we don’t know what the direction is going to be, as this will likely be more of an original spin and finding a way to tell a story in a creature feature.
Cregger is set as a producer on “Siren Head” alongside Roy Lee and Andrew Childs of Vertigo Entertainment, the team’s string of genre credits are very impressive with “Barbarian,” “Strange Darling,” “Companion,” “Weapons, “The Long Walk,” Cregger’s upcoming “Resident Evil,” “Gladys,” “The Flood,” and Curry Baker‘s next film “Anything But Ghosts.” We’ll see Duffield (via his banner, Jurassic Party Productions) and Scott Glassgold of 12:01 Films producing as well.
This sees Cregger and Warner Bros. continue their collaborative working relationship as he’s also set to direct the aforementioned “Gladys” (a prequel to “Weapons”) and his sci-fi flick “The Flood,” which is likely a big part of why he’s unlikely to helm “Siren Head,” and those duties are assumed to be taken on by Duffield.
So, certainly Duffield is a kind of on-the-rise creative voice you’d love to see working alongside Cregger on a genre project, and we cannot wait to see how “Siren Head” comes together and what the cast looks like. There have also been rumblings that he might be writing a script set in the “Alien” universe for 20th Century Studios (after working the studio multiple times, including on “Predator: Badlands,” it feels plausible), but we’ll have to wait for that one to be made official and for more concrete details on that one.
