Got a Tip?

Kristen Stewart Says She’ll “Likely Never Do A Marvel Movie” Unless Greta Gerwig Directs It

Regarding MCU dream castings, don’t expect Kristen Stewart to join the brand any time soon, except for one caveat: that Greta Gerwig directs the movie.

IndieWire reports (via the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast) that the “Love Lies Bleeding” actress shot down any hope fans of her have of Stewart signing on for a Marvel project. And let’s be honest: what true fan of Stewart wants to see her in one of those anyways? But Stewart nonetheless clarified the chances of it happening are next to none. “I will likely never do a Marvel movie. That sounds like a f*cking nightmare, actually,” Stewart told the podcast. “If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”

Stewart’s comments should come as no surprise: the MCU isn’t known for its auteurist vehicles, the kind of films the actress loves to star in. So if Stewart were to sign on, Gerwig would have to helm a project, and “[the MCU’s] system would have to change.” “You’d have to put so much money and so much into one person, and it doesn’t happen,” she continued. “And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithimic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.”

Besides, Stewart is ready to start work on an auteurist project of her own: “The Chronology Of Water,” her narrative feature debut. Stewart is still looking for producers who will back her desire for full creative control on her debut film, and the actress has threatened she won’t work on any film until she gets hers made. “I’m going to make this movie before I ever work for someone else,” she joked to Variety earlier this year. “Yeah, I will quit the f*cking business. I won’t make a-f*cking-nother movie until I make this movie. I will tell you that, for sure. I think that will get things going.”

As for Gerwig, she proved to the world she could tackle blockbuster with elan with “Barbie” last summer, 2023’s biggest movie in a variety of ways. And the multi-hyphenate has another big-budget project up next: a “Chronicles Of Narnia” reboot over at Netflix. So it’s not as if Gerwig couldn’t handle the scope of an MCU project, but rather the studio goes against a similar need she and Stewart share: that personal touch where one may leave a lasting imprint on the finished product.

In that sense (and to the surprise of no one), yeah: don’t expect Kristen Stewart or Greta Gerwig in the MCU. Those two have better things to do than that, anyway.
