“Splitsville” marks the second collaboration between Topic Studios and filmmakers Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin. As well as their second appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. Their first joint venture, 2019’s “The Climb,” a comedy that follows the rocky friendship of two guys over many years, was a hit at the 2019 Cannes, winning the Jury’s ‘Coup de Coeur’ ex-aequo award. Topic Studios CEO Michael Bloom spoke recently to THR about the opportunity to work with up-and-coming talent like Covino and Marvin.

“If you’re going to build a company like ours, you need to be willing to bet on up-and-comers. With the big studios obviously tilting towards big IP and the middle kind of getting washed out, I felt like there was a big opportunity. With Mike and Kyle, we came to know them early, and they had success with The Climb. We did a first-look deal with them because we wanted to give them a big sandbox to play in.”
With Neon acquiring “Splitsville” and setting an August theatrical release date, Bloom’s “hands off” approach seems practical. Now it’s just a question of whether or not audiences will pay to see the comedy in theaters.
The movie stars Michael Angelo Covino, Adria Arjona, Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin, Nicholas Braun, David Castañeda, and O-T Fagbenie. Covino and Kyle Marvin serve as director/producer and co-writer. Additional producers are Marvin, Emily Korteweg, Dakota Johnson, Ro Donnelly, and Samantha Racanelli.
“Splitsville” follows Carey, a recent divorcee, who seeks solace from his friends Julie and Paul, who are content in an open marriage. Things start to unravel, however, as Carey’s actions throw their partnership into chaos, with comedic results.
Synopsis:
When Ashley asks for a divorce, the good-natured Carey runs to his friends, Juli and Paul, for support. Their secret to happiness is an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos.
Neon will release “Splitsville” in theaters on August 22. Watch the first trailer below.
