Provocative, awkward, and surprisingly heartfelt: “The Threesome,” which premiered earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival, is set to hit theaters this September. Its title alone immediately sparks curiosity—suggesting sex, inviting controversy—but what it truly signals, according to director Chad Hartigan, is comedy rooted in messy human truth.
“I think the rom-com renaissance, which is very welcome in my view, has, so far, been limited to the purely wish-fulfillment, fantasy side of romance–the idealized, movie version of romance,” he explained in a recent interview. “We haven’t had one that was really grounded and not afraid to look at romantic comedy situations, but in a very elevated, sophisticated, messy, ‘This is what life would really be’ way… That’s what the script presented to me as an opportunity, and I felt like I could fill something that hadn’t quite come back yet, and something that I’m starved for and [that] I hope other people are, too.”
This September, audiences will decide if this unvarnished take on romance is what the genre has been missing—or if, as the saying goes, “three’s a crowd.”
“The Threesome” stars Zoey Deutch, Ruby Cruz, Jonah Hauer-King, Jaboukie Young-White, Josh Segarra, Arden Myrin, Robert Longstreet, Kristin Slaysman, Allan McLeod, and Julia Sweeney. Directed by Chad Hartigan (“Morris From America”) from a screenplay by Ethan Ogilby, the film is produced by Vince Jolivette, Steve Shapiro, Tim White, and Trevor White, with executive producers Zoey Deutch, David Garrett, Chad Hartigan, Allan Mandelbaum, Angie Sanfilippo, Ken Whitney, Liz Whitney, and David Garrett.
A romantic comedy-drama at its core, “The Threesome” follows the fallout of a night that blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Here’s the official synopsis:
One fateful night, the stars appear to align for the unassuming Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) as his long-time crush, the irreverent Olivia (Zoey Deutch), steers them into a threesome with an alluring stranger named Jenny (Ruby Cruz). The unexpected encounter leads to romance and pregnancy, thrusting all three into a difficult and messy journey towards true accountability and adulthood.
Vertical will release “The Threesome” in theaters on September 5. Watch the first trailer below.
