Next summer, Christopher Nolan is going to make quite the cinematic statement with his Greek epic “The Odyssey” based on the beloved literary tale from Homer, and we’re sure Universal Pictures hopes that audiences will be coaxed back to the theater for the new swords and sandals event film (coming after Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” attempted to do the same). Nolan, as usual, is making a really good case, as every still from the film promises a visual feast, and the same can be said about the latest batch of images posted by the folks over at Entertainment Weekly.
In those new pics, we see cast members in character, such as Matt Damon as Odysseus (King of Ithaca), Robert Pattinson as the villainous Antinous (a nefarious suitor seeking to marry Odysseus’ estranged wife to overtake the island kingdom), Tom Holland as Telemachus (son of Odysseys), Anne Hathaway Queen Penelope (wife of Odysseus, who is entertaining potential suitors to marry), and Himesh Patel as Eurylochus (a soldier/sailor that fights alongside Odysseus).

The threat at home isn’t the only obstacle for Odysseus as he and his war-wary men face the wrath of the gods like Poseidon, the deadly Sirens, a giant cyclops, various sea creatures such as Scylla, and the seductive sorceress Circe, played by Charlize Theron.
An impressive prologue for the film is also making the rounds in theaters. It features a tense action sequence from the years-long war between the massive Greek army and the city of Troy, with the iconic wooden horse (filled with Greek soldiers) being taken behind the gates of Troy, leading to an ambush led by Damon’s Odysseus. An obvious chapter adapted from Homer’s companion story “The Iliad,” which is wowing audiences and harkens back to Nolan nearly directing “Troy” for Warner Bros. before they pivoted to the late Wolfgang Petersen.
Others among the film’s massive cast include Zendaya, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Corey Hawkins, Ryan Hurst, Lupita Nyong’o, Logan Marshall-Green, Will Yun Lee, Samantha Morton, and more.
Those new images provided by EW can be viewed below, as “The Odyssey is heading to screens on July 17, 2026, including an image of Nolan on set alongside cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (“Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk”) lugging around a massive IMAX camera. We’re beyond hyped for one of the bigger 2026 releases Hollywood has to offer, and we have to assume some official footage that can be shared in the form of a trailer won’t be too far away (sooner rather than later, we imagine).
