‘The Love Hypothesis’ Trailer: Lili Reinhart & Tom Bateman Put Their Fake-Dating Chemistry To The Test

Claire Scanlon directs the adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling academic romance, streaming globally on Prime Video September 23.

Prime Video has released the official trailer for “The Love Hypothesis,” the romantic comedy starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman as two academics whose carefully orchestrated fake relationship begins to produce decidedly real chemistry.

Based on Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestseller, the film follows Olive (Reinhart), a brilliant Ph.D. candidate determined to secure her future in academia. But when Olive realizes that her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), she impulsively kisses Adam Carlsen (Bateman), an intimidating professor, to convince Ahn that she has already moved on.

The desperate gesture soon becomes a mutually beneficial arrangement, complete with boundaries, rules, and enough public displays of affection to make the relationship convincing. Naturally, the experiment becomes considerably more complicated once Olive and Adam’s supposed romantic chemistry stops feeling like an act.

The full trailer arrives after Prime Video’s earlier teaser, which introduced Olive and Adam’s unlikely arrangement through the style of an old-fashioned scientific instructional film. The adaptation also appears on our list of the most anticipated movies of fall 2026.

Claire Scanlon, who previously directed the Netflix romantic comedy “Set It Up”, directs from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild. The supporting cast includes Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan, alongside Marsh and Duvernay.

Hazelwood’s 2021 novel began life as “Star Wars”-inspired Reylo fan fiction before becoming a publishing phenomenon, helping establish the author’s signature blend of romance, academia, and STEM-centered protagonists. Reinhart’s Olive and Bateman’s Adam now bring that immensely popular grumpy-sunshine pairing to the screen.
