“Cape Fear” is finally headed to Apple TV on June 5, and the streamer has put together the kind of package that makes it feel like one of its bigger prestige swings of the summer.
The 10-episode series comes with a formidable pedigree. Steven Spielberg executive produces through Amblin Entertainment, while Martin Scorsese—who directed the ferocious 1991 remake—also serves as an executive producer. In front of the camera, Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson lead the series, with Bardem taking on the role of Max Cady, the vengeful ex-con who sets out to terrorize the married attorneys played by Adams and Wilson.

Behind the scenes, the show is steered by creator and showrunner Nick Antosca, whose résumé suggests a clear comfort with dark, psychologically bruising material. His credits include “Hannibal” and “Candy,” the latter of which he created, and that background makes him a natural fit for a story built around obsession, menace, and the slow corrosion of domestic safety. With that level of talent on both sides of the camera, “Cape Fear” already looks like one of the more intriguing high-end TV projects arriving as summer gets underway.
The ensemble also includes CCH Pounder, Anna Baryshnikov, Jamie Hector, Lily Collias, Joe Anders, Malia Pyles, Patrick Fischler, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Margarita Levieva. The writing staff includes Antosca, Peter Blake, André Jacquemetton, Maria Jacquemetton, Alan Page, Tara Shivkumar, Brian Evenson, Gregory Goetz, and Diana Pawell. Directors on the series include Amanda Marsalis, Jon S. Baird, S.J. Clarkson, Reed Morano, Steven Piet, Trey Edward Shults, Morten Tyldum, Jonathan van Tulleken, and Stephen Williams.
Inspired by both John D. MacDonald’s novel “The Executioners” and Scorsese’s 1991 film, the series follows Max Cady after his release from prison as he comes looking for revenge against the people he holds responsible for putting him there.
In “Cape Fear,” inspired by the 1991 remake directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Steven Spielberg, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson) when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison — and he wants vengeance.
