‘Elle’ Trailer: Prime Video’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Heads Back To High School This July

The Amazon MGM Studios and Hello Sunshine series stars Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods and has already been renewed for Season 2.

Prime Video is heading back to the world of bend-and-snap optimism, pastel confidence, and Elle Woods, but “Elle” isn’t beginning at Harvard Law. The streamer has released the official trailer and key art for season one of the “Legally Blonde” prequel series, which premieres all eight episodes on July 1, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The series has already received an early vote of confidence: ahead of its debut, Prime Video has ordered a second season of “Elle.”

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios in association with Hello Sunshine, the series goes back to 1995, before Elle Woods became a fish-out-of-water at Harvard. Here, she is still in high school, navigating tricky friendships, forbidden romance, questionable fashion choices, and the kinds of adolescent trials that begin shaping the Elle audiences first met in the 2001 comedy.

The official synopsis notes that Elle uses her family as a touchstone through those challenges, forming an even tighter bond with her mother and proving that they can get through anything together. The idea, naturally, is to track the character’s evolution into the bright, underestimated, and relentlessly determined woman at the center of the original film.

“Elle” was created by Laura Kittrell, whose credits include “High School” and “Insecure.” Kittrell serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries. Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Amanda Brown, Marc Platt, and Brad Van Arragon are also executive producers, with Jason Moore, best known for “Pitch Perfect,” directing the first two episodes and executive producing as well.

The season one cast includes Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods, June Diane Raphael as her mother Eva, and Tom Everett Scott as her father, Wyatt. Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz also star, with recurring cast members including Brad Harder, Chloe Wepper, Danielle Chand, David Burtka, James Van Der Beek, Jessica Belkin, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada, Logan Shroyer, Matt Oberg, and Sharon Taylor.

Prime Video is also marking the arrival of the series and the 25th anniversary of “Legally Blonde” with “Elle World,” a free one-day New York City event built around the world of Elle Woods, featuring experiential activations, exclusive merchandise, and other surprises—reservations open Wednesday, June 10, at 8:00 am—ET at ElleWorldNYC.com.

“Elle” premieres July 1 on Prime Video.
