After emerging as one of the breakout titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Jordan Firstman’s feature directorial debut, “Club Kid,” is headed to theaters courtesy of A24. The distributor has released the first trailer for the comedy-drama, which opens in limited release on November 6.
Written, directed by, and starring Firstman, “Club Kid” centers on Peter, a hard-partying New York City club promoter whose hedonistic lifestyle has gradually curdled into a joyless routine. His world is abruptly upended when Arlo (Reggie Absolom), the 10-year-old son he never knew existed, enters his life, forcing him to confront a responsibility he has spent years avoiding.
The trailer sets Peter’s drug-fueled nightlife and chosen queer family against his uneasy transition into fatherhood. Rather than requiring Peter to abandon that community entirely, however, the film follows the unexpected ways in which Arlo begins to find his own place within it.
The cast also includes Diego Calva, Cara Delevingne, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Colleen Camp, Vicki Pepperdine, Nigil Whyte, Eldar Isgandarov, Saturn Risin9, Miss Benny, and Alaska Riley.
“Club Kid” premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes before A24 acquired the film. In The Playlist’s review, Elena Lazic awarded it an A, praising Firstman for taking the familiar story of “the washed-up man forced by fatherhood to finally grow up” and making it feel fresh through its emotionally honest depiction of gay parenthood, queer community, and human connection.
Firstman produces alongside Alex Coco, Galen Core, Michael Bloom, and Ryan Heller. The film will also make its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before beginning its limited theatrical release on November 6.
