The next “Minecraft” movie now has a title. Warner Bros. has announced “A Minecraft Movie Squared,” the sequel to “A Minecraft Movie,” with the new film set to open only in theaters on July 23, 2027.
The title reveal came with the tagline “Everything’s squared away,” keeping the sequel’s first public push firmly in the game’s block-built language. The film is directed by Jared Hess, who returns after directing the first movie, from a screenplay by Hess and Chris Galletta. The sequel is based on the 2011 video game “Minecraft” by Mojang Studios.

The cast also brings back several major names from the first film. Jason Momoa returns as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Jack Black returns as Steve, Danielle Brooks returns as Dawn, and Jennifer Coolidge returns as Marlene. Matt Berry, who voiced Nitwit in the first movie, is also returning in a new, currently undisclosed role. Kirsten Dunst joins the sequel as Alex.
The film’s listed producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Momoa, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Olafsson, with Legendary Pictures, Mojang Studios, Vertigo Entertainment, and On the Roam among the production companies.
Alongside the title announcement, Minecraft has launched the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge, a fan contest that gives players a chance to have their own build appear in the movie or in the end credits. Fans are being asked to show off their creations using #MinecraftMovieContest.
The campaign also includes an exclusive Builder Cape. From now through June 14, players can watch three minutes of Minecraft content on TikTok or five minutes on Twitch to unlock the digital reward.
Plot details are still under wraps, but the first announcement makes the sequel’s strategy clear enough: Warner Bros. is leaning into the participatory side of Minecraft, giving fans a direct way to build their way into the movie’s orbit before the next theatrical release.
“A Minecraft Movie Squared” opens only in theaters on July 23, 2027.
