‘American Son’: Russell Crowe To Star In Rapman’s Remake Of The French Film, ‘A Prophet’

If you’re a fan of international films, you’re probably used to the idea of Hollywood snatching up the rights to a foreign-language film and remaking it in English. And though this is a fairly commonplace occurrence, for many film fans, the news of a new remake never gets any easier, with many wondering why it’s so difficult for people to read subtitles? Well, we’re sorry to have to do this, but it appears that Hollywood is back at it again with a new film, titled “American Son,” which is a remake of one of the most acclaimed French films of the past 15 years.

According to Variety, Russell Crowe has signed on to star in “American Son,” the upcoming thriller based on Jaques Audiard’s French film, “A Prophet,” which was released in 2009 and went on to gain all sorts of acclaim and awards recognition, including a nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film at the Oscars. The film tells the story of a man that falls under the control of a mobster (Crowe) while in prison and builds a new gang that will eventually usurp his boss and become a respected crime family.

“American Son,” though a remake of a beloved crime film, does have some impressive crew working on it. In addition to Crowe as one of the leads, the new film is written by respected crime author Dennis Lehane and directed by none other than Andrew “Rapman” Onwubolu. Rapman recently released the acclaimed crime film, “Blue Story,” and is clearly one of the most interesting new feature filmmakers working today.

There’s no expected release date set for “American Son,” but Paramount is apparently considering the new crime thriller to be one of the studio’s top priorities.
