As seen in the trailer for “Anne Boleyn,” the series stars Jodie Turner-Smith as the title character in a retelling of the true events that led to her death after being accused of treason. Obviously, outside of the fact that Jodie Turner-Smith is an actress that is breaking out in a big way thanks to her role in the recent film “Queen & Slim,” her new Channel 5 series is drawing attention from the fact that a Black woman is in the lead role of Boleyn. This version of “Anne Boleyn” chronicles the downfall of the title character in the context of a psychological thriller that pits Turner-Smith’s character against her husband King Henry VIII, who fights with her over the lack of a male heir.

In addition to the aforementioned “Queen & Slim,” Turner-Smith can be seen in projects such as the recent Amazon action film, “Without Remorse,” as well as a number of TV series including “Jett,” “The Last Ship,” and “Nightflyers.” Joining Turner-Smith in the series are Mark Stanley, Paapa Essiedu, Amanda Burton, Thalissa Teixeira, Barry Ward, and Jamael Westman. “Anne Boleyn” is written by Eve Hedderwick Turner, in her first major TV work. As an actress, Turner previously had a role in “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

As mentioned, it’s unclear when “Anne Boleyn” will make its official debut on Channel 5 in the UK. And then, of course, it’s even more of a mystery about when folks outside of the UK might be able to see it. But until then, we have this trailer below to tease us of Jodie Turner-Smith’s performance.
