'Battlestar Galactica': Simon Kinberg Will Write & Produce A New Film For Universal

After becoming a cult classic and then an acclaimed rebooted series on Syfy, it was almost inevitable that “Battlestar Galactica” would eventually end up on the big screen. And though Peacock is developing a new TV series, it appears that Universal is ready to also work on a new film based on the sci-fi series.

According to THR, Universal has signed on Simon Kinberg to write and produce a brand-new take on “Battlestar Galactica” for the big screen. For those not familiar with the story, “Battlestar Galactica” tells the story of the last remaining humans on starships that are constantly on the run from the evil Cylons, who will stop at nothing to wipe them out.

“’Battlestar Galactica’ is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” said Kinberg. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Kinberg is probably best known for his work on the ‘X-Men’ film franchise for Fox, where he produced almost all of the films while also writing and directing others, including “Dark Phoenix.” Now, he has another sandbox to develop with ‘Battlestar.’ As mentioned, this is far from the first time that the franchise has been remade, as the ‘70s series was given a modern remake in 2004. That series ran for several years and was adored by sci-fi fans looking for intelligent space adventures.

This film appears to be wholly separate from the upcoming series that is being developed for Peacock, produced by “Mr. Robot” creator, Sam Esmail.

It’s unclear what the timeline is for the new film version of “Battlestar Galactica.” Currently, Kinberg is putting the finishing touches on his spy thriller, “The 355,” and he has a number of other projects in development.
