TOHO and GKIDS have released a new teaser and poster for “Godzilla Minus Zero,” the upcoming follow-up to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning “Godzilla Minus One,” with a new cast addition, more returning players, and an expanded international rollout now confirmed.
The new film picks up in 1949, two years after the events of “Godzilla Minus One,” as postwar Japan and the Shikishima family face what the official synopsis calls “an all-new calamity.” Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, the former kamikaze pilot who survived Godzilla’s devastation, with Minami Hamabe back as Noriko Shikishima, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo.

The new addition is Min Tanaka, recently seen in the 2025 Japanese blockbuster “Kokuho.” He will play Kanji Murakami, a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war. The new teaser is said to offer a glimpse of familiar faces while introducing Tanaka’s character, while the poster offers a new look at the King of the Monsters.
TOHO and GKIDS have also confirmed the full list of returning cast members from “Godzilla Minus One.” Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as Kenji Noda, now the director of the Disaster Response Bureau; Yuki Yamada returns as Shiro Mizushima; Kuranosuke Sasaki is back as Seiji Akitsu, captain of the Shinseimaru; Sakura Ando reprises her role as Sumiko Ota, Shikishima’s neighbor, who now runs a local orphanage; and Mio Tanaka returns as Tatsuo Hotta, the former captain of the destroyer Yukikaze.
Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter, and VFX lead on “Godzilla Minus Zero,” following the enormous success of “Godzilla Minus One.” The 2023 film grossed more than $116 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Japan-produced Godzilla film ever, and won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, making it the first Asian film to win the prize.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” is also being positioned as a major theatrical event. Shot entirely in Japan, the film is the first-ever Japanese production to be filmed for IMAX, using IMAX-certified high-definition digital cameras and optimized for the format’s sound and image presentation.
The November 3 Japanese release date is no accident. The film opens in Japan on Godzilla Day, marking 72 years since the original “Godzilla” opened in 1954, and three years after “Godzilla Minus One” launched in Japan on the same date in 2023.
TOHO will release “Godzilla Minus Zero” theatrically in Japan on Tuesday, November 3, with GKIDS opening the film wide across North America on Friday, November 6, 2026. Cineplex Pictures will support the Canadian rollout, and TOHO also confirmed that the film will launch that same week internationally across Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand, with exact territory dates to be announced.
The film is produced by Toho Studios and ROBOT, with VFX from SHIROGUMI Inc. It is currently in production.
