Brian Michael Bendis' Marvel Comic 'Scarlet' Is Headed To HBO

In case you were having any doubts that comic books are no longer just a niche interest, but have massive four-quadrant appeal, this news should serve as a reminder. HBO — one of the titans of the premium-cable game — are getting into the business of superheroes.

At today’s ATX TV Festival, Brian Michael Bendis revealed that his comic “Scarlet” — published on Marvel’s imprint Icon — is headed to HBO. It’s not official, but Bendis more or less suggested an announcement was imminent. I haven’t read the comic, but it sounds very much in the spirit of “Deadpool,” with a fourth-wall-breaking hero, Scarlet Rue, whose rebellion against society leads to full-blown revolution. The tone has also been compared to the Punisher comics. Here’s the introduction to the first issue in the series by Marvel:

Scarlet is the story of a woman pushed to the edge by all that is wrong with the world…A woman who decides to stand up and fight back…A woman who will not back down…A woman who discovers within herself the power to start a modern American revolution!! In the vein of Alias, Powers, and Jinx, Scarlet debuts a fascinating new comics character that, with every issue, reveals new things about herself against a completely original backdrop of intrigue and drama.

Either way, sounds like a good fit for HBO where cursing and violence won’t have to be considerations. Thoughts? Have you read the comic? Let us know in the comments section.
