Cameron Crowe's 'Almost Famous' Making Inevitable Jump To Broadway

Cameron Crowe is returning to remake “Almost Famous,” but not for a TV series or another film. No, the filmmaker is taking his semi-autobiographical, adored film to Broadway.

According to Deadline, Crowe has teamed up with Tom Kitt and Jeremy Herrin to fully realize his classic story of a young journalist embedded with a rock band and its groupies for the stage. The “Almost Famous” musical will have a book by Crowe, based on his Oscar-winning screenplay, with music by Tom Kitt, and directed by Jeremy Herrin. The lyrics for the songs will be written by both Kitt and Crowe.

If there ever was a movie that just begged to be a musical, “Almost Famous” would be it. And Crowe is the perfect filmmaker to bring that vision to the stage. The film was released in 2000 and starred Patrick Fugit as a young writer that traveled with a rock band led by Billy Crudup, as he discovered that being a rock star is much more than all the glitz and glam. He also began to fall for one of the groupies, aka band-aids, played by Kate Hudson, in a career highlight.

Crowe has always been closely attached to music. He got his major break as a writer for Rolling Stone after writing a story of being 16 and traveling with the Allman Brothers Band for three weeks. Sound familiar? He continued to write for Rolling Stone, while also preparing his book debut, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” which he would later adapt for the big screen. He would then write and direct the classic “Say Anything…” which features one of the most memorable musical scenes in the entire ‘80s. Crowe also married Nancy Wilson, who was part of the massive rock band Heart. And of course, there’s “Almost Famous.”
