The Cannes Film Festival is coming to an end tomorrow, as the closing ceremonies are expected to begin on Saturday. However, before the festival ends and the Palme d’Or is awarded, the event decided to honor those special selections that were chosen by the jury in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes.

Leading the way is Karim Ainouz’s latest film, “The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao.” The drama about two sisters in 1950’s Rio de Janeiro on separate paths, longing to be reunited took home the section’s top prize.
Other films that earned prizes from the Un Certain Regard program include Oliver Laxe’s “The Fire Will Come,” Kantemir Balagov’s “Beanpole,” Michael Angelo Covino’s “The Climb,” Monia Chokri’s “A Brother’s Love,” Albert Serra’s “Liberte,” and Bruno Dumont’s “Joan of Arc.”
Chiara Mastroianni took home the Best Performance award for the film “On a Magical Night.”
The Un Certain Regard jury, led by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker Nadine Labaki, said in a statement (via Deadline):
“[The jury] would like to express the great pleasure we had diving into the diversity of this selection. This on many levels: on the subjects, on the way cinematic tools were used and on the portrayal of its characters. It was very stimulating to have seen, side by side, filmmakers that master their language so well and others still finding their way to mastery. It was a nice surprise to see 9 first features in the Un Certain Regard Official Selection. We were honored to be transported into all these different universes. World cinema remains very much alive and in good shape!”
