Trailer For 'Cold War' Which Won Pawel Pawlikowski Best Director In Cannes

Filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski is coming off a career high, with his Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015, for his amazing “Ida.” And at the recent Cannes Film Festival, Pawlikowski kept his critical luck going with his latest film “Cold War,” which picked up the Best Director prize at the prestigious event. For those of us not able to make it to France to see the film’s premiere, there’s a new trailer, and it’s a beautiful tease of what’s to come when the film gets released.

The trailer is pretty much a music video for the film. You hear lead actress Joanna Kulig singing a beautiful song, as images from the film are played. There’s no dialogue. There’s no mention of a plot. All you get is footage with Kulig and her co-star, Tomasz Kot, as they engage in what is clearly a love affair that has all the ups and downs you might imagine.

Also apparent is a hint at why Pawlikowski won his directing award at Cannes. The film is in beautiful black and white, which adds to the plot that features the aforementioned love story taking place in Poland during the Cold War in the 1950s. And the footage looks absolutely stunning.

There’s no US release date for this film yet, but we’re sure it’ll make its way here soon enough.

Here’s the official synopsis, as well as some pictures from the film:

Cold War is a passionate love story between a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. With different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatally mismatched and yet fatefully condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the couple are separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate – an impossible love story in impossible times. Pawlikowski’s most recent film, Ida, was a global success, winning the Oscar and BAFTA for best foreign language film as well as five European Film Awards including best European film, director and screenplay. His other key credits include My Summer Of Love and Last Resort.
