'Deadpool' Writers Say 'X-Force' & 'Deadpool 3' Are Still The Plan Moving Forward Despite Disney Purchase

2019 is going to be a transitional year for the entire Fox studio, but also, on a smaller level, the entire “X-Men” superhero franchise. With two films, presumably lame ducks, coming out later this year, the stage is set for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to reboot the whole damn thing once the Disney/Fox merger finalizes something in the next two months.

While fans are anxiously awaiting the mutants to join the Avengers and the rest of the MCU, there’s the little problem of Deadpool. You see, fans love the foul-mouthed superhero and are happy to see Ryan Reynolds continue with the character. But is that actually going to happen once Disney runs things? According to the writers behind “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2,” it appears that the Merc with a Mouth is moving full speed ahead with his team-up flick “X-Force” and a third entry in the solo franchise.

Speaking to Screen Rant, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were asked point-blank what the status is with the upcoming “X-Force” film, which is set to star Reynolds, Zazie Beetz, and Josh Brolin, as Deadpool, Domino, and Cable, respectively, and the inevitable “Deadpool 3.”

“According to the chronology that we’ve established, X-Force will be next, before Deadpool 3. It’s a bit of the ‘Iron Man 1,’ ‘Iron Man 2,’ ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Iron Man 3‘ model, in that sense,” says Reese.

He continues, “‘X-Force’ isn’t being written by us. It’s being written and directed by Drew Goddard, or at least that’s the plan right now. We’re not involved with that one. We do anticipate there will be a ‘Deadpool 3’ at some point, but it’s just a little premature, because it will definitely take a backseat to ‘X-Force’ for the time being.”

Wernick adds, “We’re constantly in touch with Ryan [Reynolds], and we’re always throwing ideas back and forth via text and phone conversations. So, it’s always at the front of our minds. We’ll get there when the time is right, but as of right now, ‘X-Force’ is next up.”

It sure does sound like the “Deadpool” franchise is moving forward as if the Disney merger isn’t even happening. There are still a couple unanswered questions about the “Deadpool” franchise mixing with Disney. Namely, will the Mouse House be okay with releasing a rated-R superhero film (something the studio has never done)?

All our questions will be answered, one way or another by the end of 2019, presumably. By then, we’ll have a much better look at the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and what is going to happen with Deadpool and the rest of Fox’s Merry Mutants.
