Despite Reports, 'Chronicle' Director Josh Trank Doesn't Know Anything About Those 'Fantastic Four' Reboot Rumors

nullThere’s quite a bit of buzz surrounding the release of “Chronicle” later this week, and that’s not without good reason — because according to early word, it turns out it’s a pretty damn good movie. Not only does it put a new spin on the saturated superhero genre, but it also brings a credibility and quality to found-footage movies that they’ve been sorely lacking in recent years. It’s not surprising then that some of that buzz has extended to it’s director Josh Trank, and screenwriter Max Landis.

A couple of weeks back it was reported that Trank was Fox’s first choice to direct the long-gestating Fantastic Four reboot (yes, apparently that’s still happening) but that any offer would be put on hold until after the release of “Chronicle.” However, speaking to the guys over at SuperHeroHype, Trank claimed that he knows nothing about those rumors: “I know as much as you guys know. I'm totally serious. I know as much as you. I saw that leak online and I was like, 'Um, okay, I'm trying to finish Chronicle right now.' This is weird. There's nothing to say, 'Chronicle' is exactly the kind of superhero movie that I wanted to make and, going forward, I want to have some original ideas and different things I'm working on."

Meanwhile, Max "son of John" Landis is already cashing in on the kudos “Chronicle” has earned him, with Variety reporting that Disney has picked up his untitled space adventure pitch that “revolves around the emotional journey of a brother and sister as they undertake an epic adventure.” Although “Chronicle” is his first script to make its way to cinemas, the very busy writer already has his “Frankenstein” script at Fox gearing up with Shawn Levy attached to direct, and also has a fantasy thriller based on the story of the Pied Piper in development.

So the future looks bright for both Trank and Landis, but that shine will depend on how "Chronicle" rolls out this weekend. But in any case, it's nice to see that Trank isn't necessarily eager to jump aboard whatever franchise may come his way, and we'll be curious to see what original stories he'll want to tell.
