Disney Hires 'Blindspotting' Director For A "Live-Action" Remake Of 'Robin Hood' With CGI Animals

Disney is mining the Vault yet again for a new live-action remake. This time, it’s “Robin Hood” that’s getting dusted off and made new. However, instead of doing a full-on live-action remake of “Robin Hood,” a la “Mulan,” the Mouse House is taking a more ‘Lion King’-esque approach to the source material.

According to THR, Disney has hired Carlos Lopez Estrada to direct a brand-new remake of “Robin Hood,” which will debut on the studio’s streaming service, Disney+. And as mentioned, instead of turning the animated film into a live-action project similar to the recently failed “Robin Hood” remake from Guy Ritchie, the studio has decided to stick with the singing and dancing animals of the 1973 animated classic. Utilizing a similar method that was used in “The Lion King” and “The Jungle Book,” Disney’s new “Robin Hood” will be “live-action” but feature fully-CGI anthropomorphic animals as the characters. And yes, the film will still be a musical.

Estrada is probably best known for his recent film, “Blindspotting.” In addition to work on that feature, he’s also helmed an episode of “Legion,” as well as the upcoming feature “Summertime.” Joining him on the project is writer Kari Granlund, who penned the recent live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp,” which debuted on Disney+ last fall.

As mentioned, this is far from Disney’s first remake that has been released in recent years. For nearly a decade now, the studio has continuously pumped out new versions of its classic animated features, with huge success. In 2019 alone, Disney released remakes of “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “Dumbo.” This year, the studio is planning on releasing “Mulan,” though the date has been delayed to July.

Obviously, there’s no release date set for the new version of “Robin Hood.” However, we’re pretty sure Disney will make sure that everyone is aware of its existence when the time is right.
