Edgar Wright Teases Time Travel & '60s Nostalgia In His New Film 'Last Night In Soho'

Edgar Wright seems to be flexing some new filmmaking muscles in his upcoming film “Last Night in Soho.” While he may be best known for his comedic works like “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” his last feature, “Baby Driver,” showed that the writer-director is interested in going in new directions with his future films, ditching the comedic focus and going with straight action, in the case of his last project. And in a new interview with Empire, it appears that “Last Night in Soho” is yet another example of the filmmaker going in a new direction.

It’s already been revealed that “Last Night in Soho,” which is set to star Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, Terence Stamp, Matt Smith, and Diana Rigg, is going to be a thriller that ditches the comedy and focuses on a psychological horror-ish vibe. But speaking to Empire, it appears that there’s a bit more to the film than Wright originally led us to believe.

He continued, “I’m taking a premise whereby you have a character who, in a sort of abstract way, gets to travel in time. And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of ‘be careful what you wish for.’”

So, previously, we’d heard that the film is being described as a pure psychological thriller, but with this news, it appears that there’s a bit of fantasy involved as well. We’re going to guess that the “travel in time” elements of the film don’t involve a phone booth or a Delorean, but Wright seems to be playing with the idea of some sort of genre elements in his upcoming film.

We’ll have to wait for more information on “Last Night in Soho” before we know exactly what Wright has in store for film fans. The film is set to be released on September 25, 2020. You can see a new behind-the-scenes image from the film below:
