'Evil Dead Now': Lee Cronin "Handpicked" By Sam Raimi To Write & Direct New Film In The Franchise

A new “Evil Dead” is on the horizon! And not only do we know that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are currently involved in the development of the film, apparently the new sequel is set to be made a lot sooner than fans are probably thinking.

Speaking to Empire, ‘Evil Dead’ star Bruce Campbell talked about the current status of the new film in the franchise, and in doing so, he confirmed the newest filmmaker to take on the series, as well as the film’s title.

“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next ‘Evil Dead,’” he revealed. It’s called ‘Evil Dead Now.’ Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called ‘The Hole In The Ground.’ We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

As mentioned, Cronin is probably best known for his recent film, “The Hole in the Ground.” He also directed an episode of Raimi’s new Quibi anthology horror series, “50 States of Fright.”

As for what fans can expect from “Evil Dead Now,” it appears that the film is going to continue with the formula presented in the remake of “Evil Dead,” which was released in 2013 from filmmaker Fede Alvarez, focusing on a new story and a new cast but very much still fitting into the mold laid out by Raimi and Campbell.

“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” said Campbell. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”

Obviously, with Hollywood productions in flux due to COVID-19, the idea that a new “Evil Dead” film will be arriving “soon” is relative. However, “as soon as practical” does offer a bit of hope for those horror fans wanting a new “Evil Dead” film in the near future.
