It’s official: the “Fast & Furious” franchise will continue, and it’s coming back to theaters in 2028.
Franchise star Vin Diesel announced the sequel to 2023’s “Fast X” on social media today, and also supplied a release date for when Universal will launch the film in theaters: March 17, 2028. “No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours,” the actor wrote in the post, accompanied by a pic from the original 2001 film of Diesel and the late Paul Walker. “One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts forever.”
Does the pic hint at confirmation of Brian O’Conner’s return in the upcoming film? That’s all speculation for now. Diesel expressed interest last Summer that he wanted the character back in the upcoming sequel, even though the character received a more than respectful sendoff in 2015’s “Furious 7.” Once production inches closer, there should be confirmation if that will happen; if it does, it would require heavy CGI and, in turn, a severe uncanny valley effect.
It’ll be five years since “Fast X” when “Fast Forever” hits theaters, another commercial hit in the franchise, but performing slightly worse than 2019’s “F9” and well short of the $1.23 billion 2017’s “The Fate Of The Furious” made over its theatrical run. Those dwindling box office numbers have made Universal hesitant to continue investing in the franchise, and Deisel stated in 2024 that the next installment would be the series’ grand finale. That likely won’t be confirmed until “Fast Forever” starts shooting, but expect Universal to act as if the franchise’s downward trend will continue.
