'Father Soldier Son' Trailer: Netflix's New Doc Follows A Military Family Over The Course Of A Decade

The film, shot over the course of a decade, highlights the life of Master Sgt. Brian Eisch and his changing family over the years. Contrasts between his children’s struggles, fears, and joys to his own ideals play out in all too relatable ways. Viewers don’t have to be parents or military figures to understand the basic concepts of humanity on display. One aspect that is especially at the forefront is the connection between a single father and his sons. As they grow and change, those ties are frayed, but still intact.

Journalist Catrin Einhorn worked with documentarian and photographer Leslye Davis to create this in-depth portrait of family life in America. The filmmakers, in conjunction with The New York Times, bring new life to a format usually reserved for short films or clips. Having a broader time span and world-renowned resources allow both Einhorn and Davis to expertly delve into complex subjects.

The project also owes a great deal to its high production values. In a time when gritty realism is less of a draw, utilizing top narrative tools draws in those casual viewers who would otherwise simply skip the title. Shots featured in the trailer capitalize on cinematic quality with emotion guiding the way. One such example stands out as a child watching drops of kool-aid saturate paper acts as a match to his father’s very real conflicts. Something inherently simple becomes an emotional moment as his dad fights to get back to this family.

A father’s very real battles, both during and after war, come to light in “Father Soldier Son.” The documentary premieres on July 17 on Netflix. Watch the film’s trailer below.
