'Game Of Thrones' Breaks The All-Time Record For Most Primetime Emmy Nominations For A Series

In seven seasons, HBO’s massive hit, “Game of Thrones,” has broken the record for most Primetime Emmy nominations ever. This year, alone, the series landed a total of 22 nominations, after not receiving any last year (the show was off the air, as it prepped the final two seasons). These 22 nominations bring the total the show has received up to an astounding 129. So, who did it beat? Well, just a couple classics.

The second-place position belongs to none other than “ER.” The hospital drama was on the air for 15 seasons, and racked up a total of 124 nominations, winning 22 of them. That’s a pretty ridiculous number by itself, but again, ‘GoT’ beat it in less than half the time. Plus, we have season 8 coming in 2019, and one can assume the series will add to the total then.

As for comedies, the most nominations ever goes to the hit series “Cheers,” with a total of 117. That’s also an impressive total that “Game of Thrones” leaped over this year. Now, if you include all programs, including variety series and others, far and away the winner is “Saturday Night Live,” with a record 252 nominations. However, longevity plays a large role in that, as the series has been on air for over 40 years.

Adding to the “Game of Thrones” record book is Peter Dinklage. The actor, best known for playing Tyrion on the series, has earned his seventh Best Supporting Actor in a Drama nomination for the series. That is a record for that particular category.

There’s still no word on a release date for season 8 of “Game of Thrones.” However, everyone expects a Spring/Summer 2019 window. Until then, you can see just how many of those 22 nominations the series wins on September 17, when the Emmys air on NBC.
