'Ham On Rye' Trailer: Festival Fave Indie Reinvigorates The Coming Of Age Film & Arrives Next Week

Coming of age movies are a dime a dozen, but they normally don’t include sandwiches — that is, until “Ham on Rye.” The new trailer brings about a different coming of age story.

The movie follows a bizarre tradition in protagonist Haley’s hometown. Kids dress in their grandparents’ clothing and make a pilgrimage to the local deli. There, they partake in a ceremony of food, dancing, and romance. The ceremony ends with most kids being granted permission to leave their hometown, with others doomed to stay there. “Ham and Rye” is a surreal take on a commonly told type of story.

“Ham on Rye” stars Haley Bodell (“Wild Flies“), Audrey Boos (“American Vandal“), Gabriella Herrera (“The Violent States of America“), Adam Torres (“The Beacon“), and Luke Darga (“The Ones that Stay Behind“). The movie was co-written and directed by Tyler Taormina in his directorial debut. It was co-written by Eric Berger. “Ham on Rye” is his first writing credit.

“Ham on Rye” received praise at the Locarno Film Festival and Santa Barbara International Film Festival among others. It was named a New York Times Critic’s Pick and chosen by The New Yorker as one of the Best Movies of 2020. IndieWire also named it in its 10 Best First Features in their 2020 Critics’ Poll and the good ol’ Playlist put it on its list of the Best Films of 2020 You Didn’t See.
