We often see sequels to films that become head-scratchers, and the upcoming sequel to Harmony Korine‘s Miami-set thriller “Spring Breakers” (James Franco and Selena Gomez featured in the cast) certainly fits that bill. It’s not just movie buffs that are having trouble seeing the reasoning for a “Spring Breakers 2,” this sentiment is being shared by the original film’s director.
The sometimes controversial filmmaker, behind films such as “Kids,” “Gummo,” and “Trash Humpers,” recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, when the subject eventually moved toward that sequel coming from Matthew Bright (“Tiptoes”) with a cast that includes Bella Thorne (“Assassination Nation”), Ariel Martin (“Zombies 2”), Grace Van Dien (“Stranger Things”), and True Whitaker (“Godfather of Harlem”).

Directly asked about “Spring Breakers 2,” which the filmmaker has zero involvement with, he responded with, “I have no interest in it. The first movie exists; it already is what it is for me. The thought wouldn’t even enter my mind to be involved. I can’t imagine why you’d want to make another one because it already exists.”
Adding if he thinks it’s a “compliment” that they want to do another installment (with or without him), “Not really. It’s already its own thing; there’s no need for a sequel. But it’s not up to me.”
Kornie would go on to say he wouldn’t even humor the project by seeing “Spring Breakers 2,” which isn’t terribly surprising giving his thoughts on the movie’s existence to begin with. What audiences will think of the sequel won’t be known to us until it’s finally released, but it sounds like one person won’t be showing up to support it.
