The streaming service hasn’t even launched yet, but it’s already difficult to keep track of everything coming to HBO Max this year and in the years to come. During the platform’s debut presentation last year, dozens of original programs and films were announced coming to the service in 2020, and it appears that well before its spring debut, HBO Max is already looking at expanding its TV offerings even more with a new version of “The Last of the Mohicans.”

Last April, it was revealed that filmmaker Cary Fukunaga (currently finishing up his James Bond film, “No Time to Die”) was developing a series based on “The Last of the Mohicans.” However, at the time, there wasn’t a destination named. Well, according to THR, HBO Max has placed a script order for the new series, meaning that development for ‘Mohicans’ can now kick into high gear.
Fukunaga is expected to co-write and produce the new series alongside Nick Osbourne (“Remember Me”). However, the filmmaker won’t be the one stepping behind the camera for the series. Instead, he’s trusting the directing duties to Nicole Kassell, who wowed audiences in 2019 with her work directing episodes of the critically-acclaimed HBO series “Watchmen.” For those wondering, Kassell is responsible for the first two episodes of the series, as well as the penultimate episode “A God Walks Into Abar,” which was a fan-favorite.

The new ‘Last of the Mohicans’ is expected to follow the story of the taboo love affair between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel. It’s described as a new take on James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel.
No word on when we might see more movement on ‘Mohicans,’ but with a script just now being commissioned, it’s likely that we’re still at least a year off before we might see Fukunaga and Kassell’s vision come to the HBO Max streaming service.
