Emmy Award races can be broken down into multiple categories. There are the races for an individual nomination. There are races for programs to earn as many noms as possible to influence final voting. And in the executive suites from Burbank to Hollywood to Culver City, there are the network races. The moment when a streamer or network can say they are King of the Hill. For 2025, the Emmys have a new winner, HBO Max, which earned 142 Emmy nominations overall.
Netflix followed with 121 nominations, and then Apple TV+, which set a company record with 81 noms. Disney+ took 41, while FX earned 39 nods.
HBO’s haul was led by “The White Lotus” with 27 noms, “The Last of Us” with 17 noms, “The Pitt” with 16 noms, and “Hacks” with 15 noms.
It should be noted that the Walt Disney Company will likely claim to be no. 1 with over 150 noms, combining FX, Hulu, Disney+, and ABC. And while that’s an impressive haul, those divisions operate, for the most part, independently. Netflix, Apple TV+, and HBO Max are effectively singular identities.
This was a flip from 2024, when Netflix led all distributors with 107 nominations overall. FX followed with 93, and HBO Max earned 91. Apple TV+ took 70, a record they surpassed this calendar year.
HBO or HBO Max has led all networks for five out of the past seven years. Netflix has been the champ for two years over that span. No, the winners are a different story. In 2024, FX won 36 trophies. In 2023 and 2022, HBO won 31 and 38 categories, respectively. In 2021, Netflix won 44 categories while HBO was out front in 2020 with 30. Needless to say, bragging rights do come into play.
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on September 14 at 5 PM PT, 8 PM ET.
