Henry Cavill Dons Armor And A Wig In First Look At His Character In Netflix's 'The Witcher'

Henry Cavill tried his best to bring Superman to life in the recent DCEU films, only to see his work get reportedly pushed aside in favor of a new direction. He then gave a great, arm-cocking performance in “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.” And now, the actor transitions to the small screen (and phones, tablets, or laptops) as the titular character in the upcoming Netflix series “The Witcher.” Hopefully, this time, Cavill is able to stick around and carry a franchise for once.

In the first look for the series, which is just a costume and makeup test, viewers get to see just how Cavill will look as Geralt, the aforementioned Witcher. And like his videogame counterpart, the actor has long white hair, armor, and some alcohol. So as far as that goes, so far Netflix is staying fairly close to the novels and videogames the series will be based on.

For those not aware of “The Witcher” and its story, Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter with supernatural abilities, dubbed a Witcher. He travels with a powerful sorceress and young princess fighting various monsters and sometimes evil humans. The series is a huge gamble for Netflix, as it’s sure to be very costly and has a large, devoted fanbase, who have been analyzing every bit of information coming out about the series.

With the fantasy genre at an all-time high, after the massive success of “Game of Thrones,” every studio is trying to find their own series to compete. Amazon reportedly plans on spending upwards of $1 billion to bring “Lord of the Rings” to its streaming service. HBO isn’t planning on letting the “Game of Thrones” franchise die anytime soon, as they’ve already begun casting the upcoming prequel series. And now, Netflix is using the star power of Henry Cavill and a well-known IP to create a fantasy series that adults will want to enjoy.

There’s no release date for “The Witcher,” but it’s a safe assumption we can expect it sometime in 2019.
