'How It Ends' Trailer: Forest Whitaker & Theo James Attempt To Figure Out Why The World Is Falling Apart

One of the best things about the apocalypse thriller genre is that, most of the time, the films each have a different spin on how the world ends. The typical takes include the classic monster and/or alien invasions or various natural disasters occurring, but some like to just keep the mystery tightly under wraps.  Such is the case with Netflix’s latest film “How It Ends.” What exactly is happening to cause all this mayhem on the roads? We’re not exactly sure.

Not much is known about the film and this first trailer sets up the premise without revealing too much about the story. The general gist is that the film follows a mysterious apocalyptic event that throws the roads and world into chaos. These happenings only make it more difficult for a young father to be reunited with his pregnant wife all the way on the other side of the country.

“How It Ends” stars Theo James, Forest Whitaker, Kat Graham, Kerry Bishé, and Mark O’Brien. This kind of setup is familiar territory for star James who’s no stranger to visiting post-apocalyptic worlds after starring in the “Divergent” franchise, based on the hit dystopian YA books. And Bishé and O’Brien previously starred together on the critically acclaimed show “Halt and Catch Fire.”

The film has actually been in development for quite a while. Production kicked off in 2011 after screenwriter Brooks McLaren’s first ever script was featured on the 2010 Black List and Sierra/Affinity scooped it right up. Director David M. Rosenthal was brought on in 2015 and then Netflix acquired worldwide rights in 2017. Most of Rosenthal’s previous films have been small indies that flew under the radar. His biggest film to date has been 2015’s “The Perfect Guy” which grossed almost $60 million against a budget of only $12 million.

Uncover the mystery of “How It Ends” only on Netflix July 13.
