'Independence Day 2' Promotional Art And Synopsis Promises "Next Epic Chapter"

nullNot only is "Independence Day 2" happening, if all goes well, it’ll kickstart a new trilogy, because, obviously. But 20th Century Fox needs to make sure next summer’s sequel is enticingly big and noisy, and so they’ve decided to obliterate a planet. At least on the poster promotional art.

Collider is walking around the halls of the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas and snapped the one sheet, which has an almost improbably huge alien craft shooting a giant beam of unpleasantness at Earth. And the synopsis that comes along with this one also promises lots of popcorn ready entertainment involving things from another world and whatnot:

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

So basically, we had the technology to defend ourselves, it got outmoded, and the aliens upgraded to OS X El Capitan and came back for a second try to take the planet. Or something. Anyway, we’ll find out on June 24. 2016.
