Tired of gritty comic book adaptations and keeping up with all the connections in the Marvel-verse? Well, this winter "Deadpool" will lay down some mayhem with a winking, smart-mouthed take on the genre. Ryan Reynolds has put on the suit to give the character the proper treatment —and erase the memory of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." And while the movie might seem like a lark only the most devoted superhero fans would enjoy, screenwriter Rhett Reese has revealed that two powerhouse filmmakers threw their weight around to motivate 20th Century Fox to get the movie into production.

"Having guys like [David] Fincher and [James] Cameron pushing certainly didn’t hurt, and we very well might not be sitting here if it hadn’t been for those two," Reese told Digital Spy. The filmmakers are pals with Reese, read his script and encouraged Fox to go ahead with the movie.
The movie will be super-meta, not only nodding at ‘Origins’ —"It’s referenced in ‘Deadpool,’ I wouldn’t want to spoil anything. It’s in there," said co-writer Paul Wernick— but Fox’s catalog of X-characters as a whole. "We may sneak in references to a couple of other mutants and show glimpses of other mutants," said make-up designer Bill Corso. "We have a list of all the mutants Fox has access to. We pulled a couple and are sneaking them in."
And yet, for all the talk of "Deadpool" standing alone, there is already some thought about how the character can weaved into the X-Men universe. "Probably, if I had to guess, we would do a standalone sequel before we entered the actual ensemble movies," Reese said.
