Got a Tip?

James Cameron Talks ‘Avatar’ Sequels, Wants To Prove “It Wasn’t Just Some Big Fluke The First Time”

AvatarIt has been six years since "Avatar" became a $2.7 billion phenomenon, and truly kicked off the era of 3D movies. However, the landscape has greatly changed in those years. Superhero movies are now dominant on the blockbuster landscape, the "Star Wars" franchise has returned, "Transformers" is growing into an expanded universe, and even "Independence Day" is launching a sequel. So, is there room for more "Avatar," and more importantly, does anybody care at this point? Well, James Cameron certainly hopes so as he provides a new update on the three planned sequels.

“I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” the director told EW, also adding that the creature and character designs are all very far along, if not done. And the filmmaker is certainly aware that he has a high bar to cross if he wants to make the same impact as he did the last time out.

"…you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on ‘Avatar 2,’ to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say,” he said.

We’re still a ways off from seeing anything of what Cameron has in store, with the first of the new trilogy of movies not expected to drop until 2017. But the big question remains whether or not audiences are eager to return to the world of Pandora.
